Feeding the World in 2050— Dr. Ted Schroeder, Kansas State University
World demand for food is expected to double in the next 40 years. Dr. Schroeder will address the challenges we face in meeting food demands of a rapidly expanding world population when confronted with increased societal pressures, changes in energy policy, environmental sustainability, and dwindling agricultural land resources. Emphasis will be placed on the role of U.S. animal agriculture and the importance of adopting new technologies as a means of meeting these demands.
Climate Change: Implications for Agriculture— Dr. Patrick J. Michaels, George Mason University
Dr. Michaels is a Distinguished Senior Fellow in the School of Public Policy at George Mason University. He is a past president of the American Association of State Climatologists and was program chair for the Committee on Applied Climatology of the American Meteorological Society. Dr. Michaels also was a research professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia for thirty years, and a contributing author and reviewer of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. His writing has been published in major scientific journals, including Climate Research, Climatic Change, Geophysical Research Letters, Journal of Climate, Nature, and Science, as well as in popular serials such as the Washington Post, Washington Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Houston Chronicle, and Journal of Commerce. Dr. Michaels was an author of the climate "paper of the year" awarded by the Association of American Geographers in 2004.
